Most Singapore SMEs want to use AI but are not sure where to start. The good news is that you do not need a strategy deck or a data team to know if you are ready. You just need to be honest about five things: your process, your data, your people, your systems, and your problem.
Want a deeper AI readiness assessment?
If the workflow you want to automate is unclear, AI will not make it clearer. The first question is whether you can describe the process in one sentence that a new hire would understand. If not, document it before you automate it.
The second question is about data. AI needs consistent inputs. If your customer records live in three formats, or your product names change between Shopify and Shopee, the model will be confused. You do not need perfect data, but you need one source of truth for the thing you are automating.
The third question is about people. Is there a person who currently owns this workflow and can judge whether the AI output is right or wrong? Without a human in the loop, you are not automating — you are abdicating.
The fourth question is about systems. Can the systems involved be connected without ripping everything out? Most SMEs do not need a new platform. They need the platforms they already have to talk.
The final question is about the problem. What will change in the business if this works? More revenue, lower cost, faster response time, fewer errors? If you cannot name the outcome, you are not ready to spend money yet.
The five questions at a glance
Process: Can you describe it clearly? Data: Do you have one consistent source? People: Is someone accountable for the outcome? Systems: Can they be connected? Problem: What measurable outcome are you solving for? If you score four or five yes answers, you are ready to run a small AI experiment. If you score two or three, fix the gaps first. If you score one or zero, start with a process audit, not an AI tool.
